Cable Knit Confidence

Marcus's baseball tryouts were tomorrow, and his nerves were playing ping-pong with his stomach. Not helping: his cat, Nacho, had just knocked over his lucky goldfish bowl, sending Bubbles flopping onto the carpet like a desperate, gasping beacon of doom.

"DUDE!" Marcus yelled, scooping Bubbles into a solo cup of emergency water. "This is literally the worst omen ever."

His phone buzzed. Group chat: *Team dinner @ 7. Don't be lame.*

But Marcus was lame. Or at least, his secret hobby was. While his teammates spent weekends at batting cages, Marcus had been teaching himself to knit. His latest project: a navy blue cable knit sweater that took three months and forty YouTube tutorials. The pattern was intricate, weaving cables that looked like twisted DNA strands - beautiful, complicated, and totally not something a baseball player should care about.

Especially not Jake, whose Instagram was 90% shirtless post-practice pics.

That night, Marcus sat on his bed, Bubbles in his restored bowl (RIP, Nacho's ninth life) and his nearly finished sweater across his lap. One more row. Just finish the cable pattern. But what if someone saw it? What if they laughed? What if -

His phone lit up. A text from Jake: *Hey man, good luck tomorrow. You got this.*

Marcus stared at the sweater. The cables were perfect - twisting together, supporting each other, creating something stronger together than apart. That's what a team was supposed to be, right?

The next morning, Marcus wore the sweater under his uniform. No one could see it, but he felt its weight like armor. Every time he stepped up to bat, he thought: I made this. I can do hard things.

"Bro, are you wearing two shirts?" Jake asked during warm-ups.

"Long story," Marcus said. Then, surprising himself: "I'll tell you later."

By the time tryouts ended, Marcus had hit two doubles and caught a fly ball that should've been impossible. Jake slapped his back. "Whatever you're doing, keep doing it. That sweater's lucky."

Maybe it wasn't about the sweater at all.

That evening, Marcus sat with Bubbles and Nacho (now on double-secret probation) and cast on his next project - a cable knit beanie. Jake texted again: *Team dinner Friday. Bring the sweater.*

Marcus smiled. Maybe being real meant letting people see all your pieces, even the unexpected ones. Especially those.
