Cable Knit Confidence
Marcus's palms were sweating through his fingerless gloves as he stared at the tangled mess of ethernet cables behind the media center. Tonight was Jordan's legendary start-of-summer party, and Marcus had somehow volunteered to fix the WiFi before everyone arrived. Meanwhile, his best mate Darius was already in full hype mode, livestreaming their prep to his 47 followers.
"Bruh, you good?" Darius asked, camera still rolling. "You look like you're about to throw up." Marcus adjusted his favorite beanie—the one with the tiny palm tree embroidered on the fold, a relic from his mom's Miami childhood that he'd claimed as his own signature look. "Just focused, fam. These cables are ancient. This setup is literally from 2019."
The doorbell rang. The guest list started arriving: Chloe with her ukulele, fresh from drama camp; Kai, who'd somehow leveled up his fashion game over summer break; and then—*her*—Maya, who Marcus had been lowkey crushing on since seventh period science last year. She was wearing that oversized denim jacket over everything, even in June, and Marcus felt his heart rate spike.
"Hey Marcus," Maya said, drifting over. "Whatcha doing?" His palms went full monsoon mode. "Just... fixing the WiFi. No big deal." Smooth. *So* smooth. Maya leaned against the doorframe, watching him work. "My dad's in IT, if you need help. He's always yelling about cable management." Something about how she said it—like this was the most normal conversation in the world—made Marcus's chest loosen.
The party kicked into gear. Someone hooked up Jordan's older brother's karaoke machine. Chloe started playing Wonderwall. Marcus found himself on the porch with Maya, both of them mysteriously avoiding the main crowd. "I like your hat," she said suddenly. "The palm tree thing. It's... authentic." Marcus almost choked on his punch. "Thanks. My mom got it in Miami before I was born. It's kinda my thing now."
Maya smiled, and it was different from her usual polite smiles—genuine, even shy. "I wish I had something like that. Something that was just... mine." They sat there for twenty minutes, talking about everything and nothing, while inside someone butchered Complicated and the party raged on without them.
By the time Darius found them, Marcus had somehow agreed to help Maya build her first gaming PC over the summer. "Yo! My boy Marcus out here living his best life!" Darius shouted, phone still capturing everything. Marcus flipped him off, but he was grinning. His palms were finally dry.
Later that night, Maya DM'd him: *thanks for actually talking to me. everyone treats me like Jordan's little sister.* Marcus replied with a palm tree emoji: *anytime. see you at PC build day.*
Something had shifted. Marcus realized that sometimes the coolest moments happened when you stopped overthinking and just... showed up. Even with sweaty palms and a ridiculous palm tree hat.
