Cable in the Dark

The apartment complex pool shimmered at 3 AM, that particular blue that only exists when no one is watching. Elena sat on the edge, legs dangling in chlorinated water, nursing the third glass of cheap merlot that would guarantee tomorrow's headache.

She felt like a zombie lately—moving through her marriage on autopilot, the same conversations, same grievances, same silences. David's moods had become predictable as the weather forecast. He'd stopped asking about her day months ago.

The back door opened. A man in a navy uniform stepped onto the patio, cable repair kit in hand. He froze when he saw her.

"Sorry," he said. "Complaint about the cable box in 4B. Didn't think anyone would be—"

"Up?" Elena finished. "Neither did I."

He hesitated, then sat on the adjacent lounge chair, respectful distance. His hair caught the moonlight—dark, starting to silver at the temples, the kind of handsome that belonged to a different era.

"Bad night?" he asked, not prying. Just curious.

"Bad marriage," she found herself saying. Why not tell a stranger? "He's not a bad person. He's just... gone. Distant. I wake up next to him and wonder where he went."

"My ex left two years ago," he said quietly. "One day she was there, next day, gone. Took everything except the cable box."

Elena laughed—a real laugh, the first in months. "That's tragic."

"It's something."

They sat there as dawn approached, trading stories they'd never tell anyone else. About the moments that hollow you out, the ones that fill you back up wrong. About the way love could calcify into something unrecognizable while you weren't looking.

"I should fix that cable," he said finally, standing. His hand brushed her shoulder—once, barely there.

"You will."

Elena watched him walk away, then slipped into the pool. The water shocked her cold, woke something up. She stayed until the sun crested the horizon, zombie no longer, just a woman who'd spent one night feeling like herself again.
