Buster's Secret Mission
Lily was the best spy in the whole neighborhood. At least, that's what she told herself every morning as she pulled on her detective hat and grabbed her binoculars. But her golden retriever, Buster, always ruined her missions by wagging his tail and barking at the wrong times.
One Tuesday afternoon, something strange happened. Buster slipped through a loose board in the garden fence and disappeared. Lily waited. And waited. Finally, she decided to follow him.
Being a spy meant being quiet. Lily crept through the tall grass, her heart beating fast. Where was that silly dog going? On the other side of the fence, in the neighbor's yard, she saw something amazing.
Buster was sitting beside a small boy who looked very lonely. The boy had tears on his cheeks, but he was smiling as Buster rested his fuzzy head on the boy's knee. Buster had brought one of Lily's favorite toys—a bright blue teddy bear—and dropped it beside the boy.
Lily felt something warm in her chest. Buster had been coming here every day, making friends with someone who needed a friend. He wasn't just a dog. He was a secret spy of kindness!
The boy looked up and saw Lily. His eyes went wide, but he didn't look scared. He looked hopeful.
"Is that your dog?" he asked softly.
Lily stepped forward, leaving her spy mission behind. "Yes. I'm Lily."
"I'm Marcus," the boy said. "I just moved here. I don't know anybody yet."
Buster wagged his tail between them, like he knew exactly what he was doing all along.
"Want to play?" Lily asked. "Buster loves fetch."
Marcus's smile grew bigger than the sun.
That afternoon, Lily learned the most important spy secret of all: the best missions aren't about watching from afar. They're about being brave enough to say hello. And sometimes, the best spies aren't people at all—they're dogs who know exactly where friendship is needed most.
