Buster's Big Spinach Surprise
Buster was a small brown dog with floppy ears and the biggest dream in the whole neighborhood. Every Saturday, he watched the children play baseball in the park, his tail thumping against the wooden fence. 'Someday,' he would bark softly, 'someday I'll hit that ball!'
But dogs weren't allowed to play baseball. The children loved Buster, but they said he was too small and might get hurt.
One afternoon, while chasing a butterfly near Mrs. Green's garden, Buster tumbled into a patch of enormous spinach leaves. They shimmered with an emerald glow that hummed with magic. An elderly woman appeared—Mrs. Green herself, with silver hair and eyes that twinkled like stars.
'You've found my special spinach, little one,' she whispered, pressing a leaf into his paw. 'This spinach doesn't just make you strong. It makes your dreams come true... but only if you use it to help a friend.'
Buster's heart raced. The very next Saturday, the children's baseball team was losing badly. Their best hitter, little Timmy, had sprained his ankle. The team needed one more player or they'd have to forfeit.
Buster ate the magic spinach leaf. Suddenly, he could understand everything the children were saying! He trotted onto the field, and something magical happened—no one questioned it. The children simply nodded as if a dog playing baseball was the most natural thing in the world.
When it was Buster's turn at bat, the spinach surged through him like lightning. He saw the baseball coming in slow motion, spinning toward him. With a joyous 'WOOF!' Buster hit the ball so high it disappeared into the clouds.
It came down three fields away!
The children cheered and lifted Buster onto their shoulders. But Buster didn't care about winning. He limped over to Timmy, who was sitting on the bench with his injured ankle wrapped. Buster gently licked Timmy's face, making the boy smile through his tears.
That's when Buster understood the real magic. The spinach had given him a chance to play, but friendship was what made it wonderful.
From that day on, Buster became the team's good luck charm. Mrs. Green's garden kept producing just enough magic spinach for important games, and Buster always made sure to share it with friends who needed help—not for winning, but for believing in themselves.
And every time Buster stepped onto the baseball field, he knew the true secret: magic spinach might help you hit home runs, but friends make the game worth playing.
