Buster and the Midnight Pyramid
Lily was seven years old, and she had a secret. Her dog Buster wasn't just a dog. On nights when the moon shone through her window just right, Buster could talk.
"Tonight's the night, Lily!" Buster whispered, his tail thumping against the floorboards. "The full moon means the magic elevator opens!"
Lily had discovered this secret two months ago, when she'd seen the mysterious brass door appear at the end of their apartment hallway. The old brass **cable** that operated the elevator glowed with tiny golden lights that only she and Buster could see.
They tiptoed down the hallway, Lily in her fuzzy pajama feet and Buster's claws clicking softly. The brass doors opened with a shimmering sound, like bells ringing far away.
"Floor minus one hundred!" Buster announced, pressing the only button.
The elevator descended for what felt like forever, past all the normal floors, down into the magical depths beneath the building. When it finally stopped, the doors opened to reveal something impossible.
A magnificent golden **pyramid** rose from the center of an enormous underground cavern. But this wasn't like the pyramids in books – it was covered in glowing crystals that pulsed with rainbow colors. And growing all around it were towering **palm** trees with leaves that sparkled like stars.
"Welcome to the Midnight Pyramid!" squeaked a tiny voice. A small creature with purple fur and enormous eyes peeked from behind a palm frond. "I'm Pip! I guard the Wishing Well inside!"
Lily's eyes grew wide. "A Wishing Well?"
"But it's very special," Pip explained solemnly. "You can only wish for something that will make someone else happy."
Buster nudged Lily's hand. "You know what to wish for."
Lily thought hard. She could wish for toys, or adventures, or magic powers. But then she remembered her grandmother, who missed seeing the ocean since moving to the city. "I wish for Grandma to see the ocean whenever she wants, even from her apartment."
The pyramid flared brilliantly, and a small golden shell appeared in Lily's hand. "When she holds this, she'll see and hear the ocean," Pip said. "Your wish was pure and kind."
The elevator **cable** chimed – it was time to go. As they rode back up, Buster licked Lily's cheek.
"That was the best adventure yet," he said.
The next morning, Lily gave the shell to her grandmother. When Grandma held it, tears of joy filled her eyes. "I can hear the waves! I can see the blue water! How did you know?"
Lily just smiled, patting Buster's head. Sometimes, she thought, the best magic isn't the kind you keep for yourself – it's the kind you share with the ones you love.
