Buster and the Midnight Baseball

Buster was a golden dog with floppy ears and a nose that could smell adventure from miles away. Every night, while his family slept, Buster would sneak out to the old baseball field behind their house. The fence had a hole just big enough for a curious dog to squeeze through.

One full-moon night, Buster heard something strange. *Thwack!* The sound of a baseball being hit echoed across the empty field. But nobody was supposed to be there!

Buster crept closer and his eyes went wide. Standing on the pitcher's mound were three old baseballs, wobbling on their own like they were trying to walk. They looked ragged and worn, with stitches coming loose — almost like little zombie baseballs that had come back to life!

"Play ball!" one squeaked in a tiny voice. "We want one more game before we're thrown away!"

The zombie baseballs explained they'd been forgotten in the equipment shed for years, and tonight was their last chance to feel the joy of the game. But they couldn't play properly without someone to hit and catch them.

Buster's tail wagged so hard it almost knocked him over. He LOVED baseball! His family played catch every weekend.

"I'll help!" Buster barked gently.

All night long, under the sparkling stars, Buster played the most magical baseball game of his life. He chased the zombie baseballs as they flew through the air, catching them softly in his mouth before placing them gently back in the grass. The baseballs cheered and laughed, their stitches glimmering with moonlight.

By sunrise, the zombie baseballs weren't sad anymore. They had played their final game, and a dog had been their friend.

"Thank you, Buster," the oldest baseball whispered. "You showed us that old things still have magic inside."

Buster walked home tired but happy, his heart full. Sometimes the best friends are the ones you least expect — even if they're a little bit unusual.
