Bull's Eye at the Deep End
The chlorine hit Maya's nose before she even saw the pool—Coach Carter's backyard oasis, the social center of Jefferson High. She gripped her towel like a lifeline. Why had she agreed to this? Oh right. Because Chloe said Caleb would be here, and Maya's brain apparently short-circuited around his hazel eyes.
She spotted him immediately, laughing with his friends near the diving board. Of course he looked perfect, his dark hair plastering back as he emerged from the **water** like some Netflix teen heartthrob. Meanwhile, Maya hadn't learned to swim until last summer and still hugged the wall like her life depended on it.
"Maya! You made it!" Chloe materialized, dragging her toward the deep end. "Everyone's doing challenges today. You in?"
Before Maya could protest, she heard HIS voice. Jason Miller, the reason Maya had switched her locker assignment twice this semester.
"What's the matter, Princess? Scared of a little water?"
The nickname landed like a punch to the gut. Jason had been calling her that since seventh grade when she'd worn a crown to school for spirit week and he'd "accidentally" knocked it off her head in the hallway. The whole school had laughed.
Maya's hands balled into fists. She was so done with this **bull**. All through middle school, Jason had made it his mission to humiliate her—tripping her in gym, making fun of her stutter during presentations, spreading rumors about her crush on Caleb. But this was supposed to be high school, where things were different. Where she was different.
"Actually," she heard herself say, voice steadier than she felt, "I was about to show you how it's done."
Chloe's eyes went wide. Maya marched to the diving board, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. She could do this. She'd been practicing every weekend at the community center. She wasn't that scared little girl anymore.
But as she climbed the ladder, her knees started shaking. The **pool** stretched out beneath her, suddenly vast and terrifying. What if she sank? What if everyone laughed—again?
Then she saw Caleb watching from the side, his expression unreadable, and something shifted inside her. Not courage exactly—more like rage. Rage at Jason, at her own fear, at every time she'd backed down instead of standing up for herself.
Maya launched herself off the board. The air rushed past her ears, a blur of motion and terror and something else—something like power. She hit the water cleanly, sliced beneath the surface, and kicked hard toward the other end.
When she surfaced, gasping, Jason was still standing there, mouth slightly open. Behind him, Caleb was actually grinning.
"Not bad," Maya said, treading water like she owned the place. "Your turn, Miller. Or are you all talk?"
Jason's face flushed. But as he climbed onto the diving board, Maya noticed his hands were shaking too.
Later, as the sun began to set and everyone huddled around the fire pit with sodas and stolen snacks, Caleb slid onto the bench beside her.
"That was pretty epic," he said quietly. "I didn't know you could do that."
Maya felt something warm bloom in her chest, but it wasn't the same flutter she used to get around him. It was something steadier. Stronger.
"There's a lot you don't know about me," she said, and meant it.
The real victory hadn't been the dive. It was finally realizing she didn't have to perform for anyone—not for Caleb, not for Chloe, and definitely not for Jason. She was just Maya, flaws and fears and all, and somehow that was enough.
