Bull in the Battery
Marcus gripped his iphone like a lifeline, thumb hovering over Instagram as the bus rattled toward the away baseball game. Not that he'd post anything. His life wasn't exactly highlight material—mostly just existing in the background while his friends lived loudly.
"Yo, you good?" Ty asked, sliding into the seat beside him. Ty, who'd been his friend since third grade, back when friendship was about sharing Pokémon cards instead of navigating the minefield of high school hierarchy.
"Yeah. Just nervous about the game." A half-truth. Marcus was always nervous about something.
Their team was the underdogs that day, playing against Oak Creek—the school whose mascot was literally a bull painted on every surface, whose players bulked like they'd been drinking protein shakes since birth. The first inning happened in a blur. Marcus struck out. Again.
But then Ty's golden retriever, Buster, who'd somehow slipped his leash at the edge of the field, decided this baseball diamond needed his energy. The dog streaked across the grass, intercepted a foul ball, and proceeded to play keep-away with the Oak Creek players as they tried to retrieve it.
The whole field erupted. Even their opponents were laughing. And for the first time all season, Marcus wasn't thinking about striking out or who was watching. He was just laughing, helpless and genuine.
"Guess Buster's your new teammate," Ty joked, bumping his shoulder.
Afterward, as they huddled around phones to capture the moment, Marcus finally posted something—not a filtered shot of himself looking cool, but the grainy, chaotic video of a dog stealing the show.
That night, his notification count spiked. People actually tagged him. The shy kid who never spoke up had somehow become the one who brought the whole team together, even if it was his friend's dog who did the heavy lifting.
Sometimes the best moments aren't the ones you practice for. They're the ones that happen when you stop gripping the phone so tight and just let yourself laugh at the chaos.
