Breathless at the Deep End

Maya stood at the edge of the pool, clutching her phone like it was a lifeline. Her screen showed exactly what she feared: everyone from school was at Jordan's party, posting stories with captions like "best night ever" and "living my best life." Meanwhile, she was stuck at her cousin's boring swim meet, feeling like a total zombie after staying up until 3 AM doom-scrolling.

"You gonna jump in or what?" a voice called out.

Maya looked up. It was a boy from the rival school, dripping wet, his hair plastered to his forehead. Cute, but not in the Instagram-perfect way she was used to obsessing over.

"I'm just watching," she mumbled.

"Your loss." He dove in, effortlessly cutting through the water like he was born to it.

Maya's stomach growled. She'd barely eaten all day, too anxious about being seen in her swimsuit. Her mom had packed her a salad with actual spinach leaves, which Maya had quietly tossed in the trash because honestly, who eats spinach at a pool meet?

The boy surfaced, grinning. "I'm Liam, by the way. And you look like you'd rather be literally anywhere else."

Maya laughed despite herself. "Is it that obvious?"

"You've been staring at your phone for twenty minutes without swiping once. That's zombie behavior, literally." He treaded water, looking up at her. "I'm supposed to be training for regionals, but honestly? I'd rather be home playing video games."

Something about his honesty made Maya set down her phone. "What's it like?" she asked. "Swimming, I mean."

Liam's eyes lit up. Underwater, everything quiet. No phone notifications, no people watching, no expectations. Just you and the water." He paused. "Wanna try? I won't let you drown, promise."

Maya hesitated, then slipped off her cover-up. She'd spent so much time worrying about how she looked to everyone else that she'd forgotten how good it felt to just move. The water was cool against her skin, shocking her awake. For the first time all day, her brain stopped racing.

"See?" Liam said when she surfaced, grinning. "Better than any party."
