Breaking the Surface

cablecatpool

Maya's cat, Pickles, gave her that judgy look cats specialize in as she stood in her bathing suit for the first time since seventh grade.

"You're literally judging me right now," Maya said, gesturing at her reflection. "I'm going to look ridiculous at Tyler's pool party."

Pickles meowed and returned to grooming.

The invite had been unexpected — Tyler, the effortlessly popular boy whose locker was next to hers, had actually noticed her existence beyond borrowing a pencil. But now she was spiraling. What if everyone was wearing those cute coordinated sets from TikTok while she showed up in her old tankini from middle school?

Her phone buzzed. A group chat notification.

*hey can someone bring an HDMI cable? we're trying to set up movies for later* - Chloe, the queen bee who somehow made everything look easy.

Maya stared at the screen. This was it — her in. She had that fancy cable her dad insisted on buying, the one that supposedly made everything 4K or whatever.

*yeah i can bring one*

Before she could overthink it, she grabbed the cable from the drawer where it had sat unused for months.

The backyard was already buzzing when she arrived. People scattered across the patio, pool glowing blue in the twilight. Maya felt small, suddenly aware of her old swimsuit, her messy bun, everything.

"Maya!" Tyler waved from near the pool's edge. "You made it!"

She made her way over, clutching the cable like a lifeline. Chloe was there, surrounded by her usual crowd, looking perfect in a matching set that probably cost more than Maya's entire wardrobe.

"Here," Maya said, thrusting the cable forward. "For the movies."

Chloe took it, actually smiling. "Oh my god, you're a literal lifesaver. We were about to give up on the whole movie idea."

Someone cannonballed into the pool, sending water spraying everywhere. Maya jumped back, but not fast enough — she got splashed right down her front.

Everyone laughed, but not meanly. Tyler splashed back at the cannonballer. "Maya, get in here! The water's perfect!"

Something shifted. Maybe it was the way Chloe had actually thanked her, or how Tyler was waiting for her to join them, or the fact that Pickles would definitely approve of her being brave for once.

"Whatever," she said, dropping her phone on a towel. "I'm coming in."

As she dove into the cool water, surrounded by laughter and splashing and the kind of moment you can't plan for, Maya realized sometimes you just have to take the plunge — literally.
