Bramble's Mountain of Riddles

bearsphinxzombie

Bramble was a small bear with very big dreams. Every night, he'd sit by the river and watch the stars, wondering what made them twinkle. His mother said only the ancient sphinx at the top of Moonlight Mountain knew the secrets of the sky.

"But Mom, that's three whole days away!" Bramble protested.

"Then you'd better pack extra honey," she winked.

So Bramble packed his favorite honey jar, his lucky pebble, and his courage—though that last one was quite small. As he climbed higher, the trees grew thick with moss that glowed soft green in the twilight.

On the second day, Bramble met someone strange shuffling through the mist. It looked like a rabbit, but moved like it was sleepwalking—slow, wobbly, and bumping into trees.

"Hello?" Bramble called gently.

The rabbit groaned, "Brains... need... carrots..."

Bramble gasped. "You're a zombie!"

The rabbit flopped down. "Not really. I'm Zola, and I've been cursed by a grumpy wizard. Now I can only talk in zombie phrases, but I'm actually quite nice." Her eyes twinkled sadly. "I'm trying to reach the sphinx too. Maybe she can break my spell."

"We can go together!" Bramble beamed. He shared his honey with Zola, and she showed him which berries were sweetest.

At last, they reached the peak. There sat the sphinx—lion body, eagle wings, and a wise face framed by golden feathers. Her eyes held stories older than mountains.

"Travelers," she spoke, and her voice sounded like wind chimes. "I am Selene. Ask your questions, but first answer mine: What shines brighter when shared?"

Bramble thought hard. "Gold?" Zola shook her head. "Fireworks?" The sphinx smiled enigmatically.

Then Bramble remembered sharing his honey with Zola, and how her loneliness had lifted when they became friends.

"Light!" Bramble cried. "Happiness! Friendship!"

Selene purred. "Wise answer, little bear. And for you, enchanted rabbit—kindness has already begun breaking your curse. Look."

Zola looked down. Her zombie shuffle had become a bounce. Her foggy eyes sparkled clear.

"The curse weakens with friendship," Selene said. "Complete your journey together, and it will fade completely."

Bramble finally asked his question: "Why do stars twinkle?"

"Because they're dancing," Selene whispered. "And every star has friends who make them shine brighter—just like you two."

Bramble and Zola tumbled down the mountain, not as bear and zombie, but as best friends who had learned that the brightest magic is the kind you share.
