Bottom of the Pyramid

The social pyramid at Lincoln High was as obvious as the bleachers in the gym. You had the apex—varsity athletes, TikTok-famous crowd. Then the middle layers—band kids, theater crew, gamers. And at the bottom? People like me: invisible, blending into lockers, practically ghosts in the hallways.

That changed the night of Jasmine's pool party.

My best friend Kai had been invited because his cousin was dating Jasmine's sister. I was the plus-one that nobody actually wanted there. Typical.

"Just act natural," Kai said, grabbing a soda. "You're overthinking it."

Easy for him to say. He wasn't the one whose stomach felt like it was doing backflips every time someone glanced his way.

I ended up by the pool, pretending to be fascinated by the underwater lights. That's when I saw it—a calico cat perched on the fence, looking utterly unimpressed by the hormone-fueled chaos below. It licked its paw with maximum judgment energy.

"You too, huh?" I whispered.

The cat's response was to knock over a perfectly stacked pyramid of red Solo cups someone had spent way too long arranging. The crash echoed across the yard like a gunshot.

Silence. Forty faces turned toward me.

"My bad," I said automatically, even though it was literally a cat's fault and I had zero control over the situation.

But then Tyler—actual Tyler, whose varsity jacket cost more than my entire wardrobe—started cracking up. "Dude, that cat just committed first-degree murder on your beer pong setup."

Next thing I knew, I was sitting with the popular crowd, swapping cat stories like I'd been part of their pyramid all along. The calico, now curled on a lawn chair like she owned the place, became the party's VIP.

"She's chaotic," I said, scratching behind her ears. "I respect it."

"Same," laughed Jasmine. "Maybe she can knock over the pyramid next to the stereo too. That thing's been annoying me all night."

By midnight, Kai and I were planning our own fake dj setup—because apparently being the guy who saved the party from a cat vendetta made you interesting.

Who knew?
