Bottom of the Ninth
Maya's iPhone buzzed in her lap, lighting up with another notification. She didn't even look. Freshman year at Northwood High was basically one giant pyramid scheme—you paid in friendship coins and hoped someone eventually paid out popularity.
"You coming?" Liam asked, already halfway up the bleachers.
"Yeah," Maya lied, adjusting her oversized jersey. It had belonged to her older brother, now away at college. Everything she wore was someone else's hand-me-down, including her confidence.
The baseball field stretched out below them like a green promise. This was it—the first varsity game of the season, and apparently a rite of passage. Everyone who was anyone would be there. Maya just wanted to be anywhere but invisible.
Her iPhone vibrated again. This time she glanced. A group chat: Sophomores and Juniors. She'd been added somehow, probably by accident. They were discussing where to sit. The pyramid. The absolute social pyramid of the baseball bleachers.
Liam found a spot in the middle tier. "This good?"
"Perfect," she said, though her stomach did that thing where it forgot how to exist.
Below them, players warmed up. The crack of bats, the smell of popcorn and cut grass, the collective energy of a hundred teenagers all pretending they belonged exactly where they were.
"That's Tyler Chen," Liam said, nodding toward the field. "Junior. Shortstop."
Maya looked. Tyler Chen, who she'd had a crush on since orientation, was currently adjusting his cap and laughing with teammates. Her iPhone camera opened instinctively. Just one picture. Proof she was here. Part of this.
"You're not gonna post that, are you?" Liam asked.
"No. Maybe. I don't know."
Tyler looked up toward the bleachers. For one second, their eyes connected. Maya's thumb slipped. The shutter clicked. Not exactly the candid aesthetic she'd been going for.
Someone behind them laughed. "Nice awkward screenshot."
Her face burned. The pyramid had spoken. She was still at the bottom.
But then—"Yo, Maya!"
She turned. Three girls from her English class waved from the row above. "Come sit with us!"
Liam raised an eyebrow. "Guess you're moving up in the world."
"Maybe," she said, standing up. "Or maybe there's no pyramid at all. Maybe it's just baseball and people who like baseball."
"Deep," Liam said. "Also, you're still gonna post that picture of Tyler."
"Shut up."
Her iPhone buzzed. New group message: Can't believe Maya actually came lol.
She smiled. The game was just starting. She wasn't at the top of anything yet. But for the first time, she wasn't sitting alone at the bottom either.
And that was enough.
