Blue Hour at the Edge

The resort infinity pool blended with the sea, a perfect illusion of continuity. Marcus floated on his back, ears underwater, the world muted to a dull roar. This was the closest he got to peace lately.

"Marcus!" Elena's voice cut through. "We're going to be late for padel."

He pulled himself up, water streaming from his hair. Padel. Of course they had to play padel on their anniversary trip. Elena's idea. She said they needed shared activities. What they needed was to talk about the miscarriage, the four-month-old silence stretching between them like the ocean beyond the pool's edge.

At the restaurant later, Elena picked at her spinach salad. He watched her jaw work. She'd had spinach in her teeth during the post-fertility clinic lunch, the day they got the bad news. She'd smiled anyway, brave, hope-creased, and he'd fallen in love with her all over again. Now he couldn't remember the last time she'd smiled like that.

"You're a zombie," she said suddenly, staring at her wine glass. "You're here, but not here."

The words hit harder than he expected. She was right. Since the baby—the baby that never happened—he'd been moving through motions, eating, sleeping, working, but the essential part of him had curled up and died.

"I don't know how to come back," he said, the truth spilling out finally. "I'm scared if I feel anything, I'll drown."

She reached across the table, her hand covering his. Her palm was warm, alive.

"Then we drown together," she said. "But not tonight. Tonight we swim."

They walked to the pool under moonlight, stripped down, and slipped into the water. Side by side, they floated on their backs, staring up at the stars, the ocean stretching dark and infinite beyond them. For the first time in months, the weight in his chest lightened. They weren't fixed. But they were floating.
