Blue Hair, Silver Fox
Maya's mom screamed when she saw the bathroom sink. A blue stain the size of a dinner plate. The kool-aid hair dye that was supposed to be "totally temporary" had other plans.
"It's just hair, Mom!" Maya shouted, locking herself in her room. Her Instagram was already blowing up. Her friends were living for the new look, but she knew her dad would absolutely lose it when he got home from his shift.
Third period the next day, Jordan cornered her at her locker. The same Jordan who'd been spreading rumors about her since seventh grade.
"Nice hair," Jordan sneered. "Did you lose a bet?"
Maya's hands shook. She'd been taking this BS for two years. But something about the blue hair made her feel different. Braver. Like she'd already crossed a line, so what was one more?
"Actually," Maya said, her voice steadier than she felt, "I did it because I wanted to. Crazy concept, I know."
Jordan's face went all pinched. For a second, Maya thought Jordan might actually throw a punch. Instead, Jordan just flipped her off and stormed away.
That afternoon, Maya's older cousin Tessa picked her up from school. Tessa was twenty-four, worked at a vintage clothing store, and had once been voted "Most Likely to Become Famous" in her yearbook.
"Heard you stood up to Jordan," Tessa said, turning down the radio. "Proud of you, kiddo."
"I feel like I'm going to puke," Maya admitted.
"That's the feeling," Tessa said. "That's what being brave feels like. Like you might throw up. But you did it anyway."
Tessa tapped the steering wheel. "You know what my grandfather used to say? 'The fox knows when to fight and when to run.' You fought today, Maya. And it looked good on you."
Maya looked in the side mirror. Her blue hair was wild, frizzy from the humidity, absolutely not what her parents wanted. But it was hers. She thought about Jordan's face. About Tessa's grin. About finally, finally feeling like herself.
"Hey Tessa?"
"Yeah?"
"Think I can borrow your silver eyeliner?"
Tessa laughed. "Only if you teach me how to do those winged tips you've been doing. The ones you learned from TikTok?"
Maya smiled. For the first time in forever, she didn't feel like apologizing for taking up space. Her hair was blue. Her eyeliner would be silver. And Jordan could absolutely kick rocks.
