Blue Hair Redemption

Maya's hands shook as she stared at her reflection. The blue hair dye had turned out way more electric than the box promised—like, full-on smurf vibes. Her mom was gonna lose it when she got home from her shift.

"You sure about this?" Kae asked, leaning against Maya's bedroom doorframe. They'd been best friends since kindergarten, back when Maya's biggest worry was whether she'd get the sparkly pencils in class.

"Nope." Maya grabbed her hoodie. "But if I chicken out now, I'm literally dying of shame before first period tomorrow."

Jordan's party was already bumping when they arrived. Maya felt like a goldfish who'd gotten dropped into a shark tank—everyone else seemed to know exactly what to do with their hands, their faces, their lives. She'd spent seventeen years being basically invisible, and suddenly she was the girl with the BLUE HAIR.

Cool, confident, totally-not-nervous Maya. Right.

She spotted him across the room. Jayden, who she'd been lowkey crushing on since bio lab partner duty last month. He was laughing with his friends, that stupid perfect laugh that made her stomach do somersaults.

And there was Riley, Jayden's ex, standing way too close to him.

Riley caught Maya's eye and smirked. "Love what you did with your hair," she said, loud enough for half the room to hear. "Very... brave."

The room went quiet.

Maya's face burned. This was it—the moment everyone would remember as The Time Blue-Haired Maya Died of Social Suicide.

But then Kae squeezed her hand. And Maya thought about how she'd spent her entire life shrinking, making herself small, being someone who never took up space. Someone who let people like Riley walk all over her because it was easier than making waves.

She thought about her hair—not a mistake, but a choice. HER choice.

"Yeah," Maya said, her voice steadier than she felt. "I figured it was time to stop being scared of standing out. Some of us don't need to put others down to feel good about ourselves."

Riley's smirk faltered.

Jayden looked over. His eyes widened. "Your hair..." He started to smile. "It looks sick, Maya."

Riley rolled her eyes and stomped off.

Maya let out a breath she didn't know she'd been holding. Her heart was pounding, her palms were sweaty, and she was pretty sure she'd just made an enemy for life.

But she also saw Jayden walking toward her. And for the first time ever, Maya didn't want to be invisible.
