Blue Hair, Dead Inside

Maya stared at the mirror, clutching the box of Midnight Blue hair dye like it was a bomb. Three AM, and her cat Pickles sat on the bathroom counter, judging her with those yellow eyes.

"You think I can pull this off?" she asked him. Pickles yawned, unimpressed.

Tomorrow was the first day of sophomore year, and Maya was done being Background Character #3 in her own life. She wanted to be That Girl With Blue Hair. The one people actually noticed.

The problem: she'd already watched three YouTube tutorials, read two Reddit threads, and stress-ate an entire family-size bag of chips. She was running on pure anxiety and two hours of sleep—a total zombie.

Her phone buzzed. Group chat blowing up with everyone's outfit checks and "Omg so nervous" texts. Even at 3 AM, the performance never stopped.

Maya ripped open the dye box. Hands shaking. What if it turned green? What if her mom freaked? What if everyone laughed?

Pickles batted at a dye tube, knocking it into the sink. Blue splattered everywhere—including on her favorite hoodie.

"Great. Thanks, Pickles."

But something about the chaos made her laugh. Really laugh, for the first time all summer.

She smeared the dye through her hair, not caring about the stains on her forehead or the mess on the counter. Who cared if it was perfect? It was hers.

Fifty minutes later, she rinsed it out. The blue was patchy. Kind of purple in spots. Definitely NOT the Instagram tutorial look.

Pickles meowed at his reflection.

"Yeah," Maya said, touching her uneven blue hair. "It's a mess."

But looking in the mirror, she didn't see the girl who hid in hoodies and stayed quiet in class. She saw someone willing to show up as a hot mess. Someone real.

The zombie inside her felt a little more alive.

Maya grabbed her phone and snapped a mirror selfie. No filter. Caption: "Well, this happened."

Send.

Her phone lit up instantly. But this time, she didn't stress over the responses. She was too busy feeling like herself for once.
