Blue Hair and Bad Luck

hairfrienddog

The bathroom mirror showed a stranger. Well, a stranger with blue hair. Electric, chaos-in-a-box blue. Maya's mom was gonna lose it, but honestly? Worth it.

Her phone buzzed. Group chat: "Meet at the mall in 20?"

Maya's fingers hovered. She'd been friends with Chloe and Jordan since sixth grade, but lately everything felt different. They talked about boys she didn't like and parties she wasn't invited to. She was the third wheel, the backup friend, the one they called when their plans fell through.

She typed "Can't, busy," then added, "Maybe later."

Her brother's dog, Buster, scratched at the door. Buster was an ancient, grumpy chow mix who hated everyone except Maya and anyone holding food. Perfect company.

They ended up at the park because why not. Maya sat on a swing, checking her reflection in her phone screen. The blue was kinda a lot. Chloe would say it looked "ratchet." Jordan would just give her that pitying look like, "Oh Maya, trying again."

"Your hair is sick."

Maya jumped. Some guy she'd never seen before was standing there, holding—yup—a dog leash attached to the most chaotic golden retriever puppy she'd ever witnessed.

"Oh, uh, thanks? I did it myself. Clearly."

"Clearly," he grinned. "I'm Leo. This chaos machine is Cooper."

Buster, who usually tolerated no living thing, let Cooper sniff him. Maya stared. Since when was her antispecific dog suddenly social?

"Maya," she said. "This is Buster. He's... usually not friendly."

"Must be the blue hair vibes," Leo said. "Cooper's got good taste."

They sat on the swings for an hour while the dogs did whatever. Leo was in the grade above her, played guitar, and apparently had never once cared about being in the "right crowd."

"So," Leo said eventually, "your friends blowing up your phone yet?"

"How'd you know?"

"Chloe's been posting about how someone's being 'fake' lately."

Maya's stomach dropped. She pulled out her phone. Five messages from Chloe: "Why are you being weird?" "Is everything okay?" "You're acting different."

"Yeah," Maya said quietly. "She's not wrong. I am acting different."

"Different good or different bad?"

Maya looked at her blue hair in her phone reflection. Different like herself.

"Different like me," she said.

Leo nodded. "Cool. Me too."

Buster chose that moment to get up and actually follow Cooper when Leo called him. Maya's dog, who ran away from literally everything, followed this guy home like they were best friends.

"I think your dog likes me better than you do," Leo said.

Maya laughed. "He's got excellent judgment."

"So do I," Leo said. "You coming?"

Maya thought about Chloe's messages. About sitting at home waiting to be someone's second choice. About electric blue hair and unexpected friendships and dogs who knew what they wanted.

"Yeah," she said. "I'm coming."

Her phone buzzed again. Chloe: "Answer me!"

Maya turned it off and followed the boy and the two dogs toward whatever came next. Blue hair and all.
