Betrayal by the Water
The corporate retreat's shimmering pool reflected Cristina's fractured thoughts. She adjusted the brim of her hat—wide enough to hide the dark circles under her eyes—and watched Marcus laugh with the investors. Her best friend. Her betrayer.
Three years ago, they'd both been drowning in student loans, making midnight pacts to make it together. Now Marcus had taken credit for Cristina's presentation, accepted the promotion she'd earned, and had the nerve to invite her to this weekend getaway.
"You're brooding again," he said, sliding into the lounge chair beside her. His posture was relaxed, confident. Not like someone carrying the weight of stolen success.
"Just enjoying the water," she lied.
"The pool's beautiful, isn't it?" He waved toward the azure surface. "Come on, one last swim before we head back. For old times' sake."
Cristina stood, letting her hat fall onto the chair. She waded into the cool water, the surface rising to her waist. Marcus followed, his expensive watch catching the sunlight.
"I know what you did with the Peterson project," she said, her voice steady despite her pounding heart. "I know you accessed my files the night before the presentation."
Marcus stopped. The water around them seemed to still. "Cristina..."
"Don't. Just don't." She touched his arm, her palm cool against his warm skin. "I'm not going to expose you. That's not what friends do. But I'm done trusting you."
The silence stretched between them, heavier than the humid air. Finally, he nodded, once, almost imperceptibly.
They swam in opposite directions. When Cristina emerged from the pool, she left Marcus behind in the deep end, alone with the ripples of what he'd lost.
