Berry and the Sunset Oranges
Berry was a small bear with fur the color of morning toast. He lived in a cozy cave at the edge of the Whispering Woods, where he spent his days watching the sky turn brilliant shades of pink and gold.
One evening, as Berry sat on his favorite rock, he noticed something strange. The sunset wasn't turning orange anymore. It was staying gray, like old wool. The next morning was the same—no golden light, no cheerful colors.
The forest creatures were worried. The rabbits hopped sadly. The birds sang quiet songs. Even the usually cheerful squirrels drooped.
"What's happening?" asked Lily, a tiny rabbit with ears as long as daisy stems.
"I'll find out," Berry promised. He packed a small bag with honey cakes and set off toward the distant Sunset Mountain, where the sky's colors were said to be born.
The journey took three days. Berry climbed over rocky hills and through misty valleys. Finally, he reached the mountaintop, where he found an ancient stone fountain—but it was empty.
Beside the fountain sat a very old, very wise turtle named Timothy.
"The sunset vitamins are gone," Timothy explained slowly. "Every hundred years, someone must refill the fountain with orange gems from the Crystal Cave. Without them, the world loses its color and joy."
"Where is this cave?" Berry asked, his eyes wide.
Timothy pointed a wrinkled claw toward a dark opening in the mountainside. "But beware, little bear. The gems only reveal themselves to the pure of heart."
Berry took a deep breath and ventured inside. The cave sparkled with thousands of crystals—blue, green, purple—but no orange ones. He searched and searched until his paws were tired and his honey cakes were gone.
Just as he was about to give up, Berry remembered something. Every morning, he saved a piece of his breakfast for the birds. Every evening, he shared his cave with creatures who needed shelter.
Suddenly, a warm glow appeared ahead. There, nestled in a small alcove, lay a single perfect orange gem. It shimmered like captured sunshine.
Berry carried it carefully back to the fountain and dropped it in. *Clink, splash, swish!*
Instantly, golden light burst from the fountain, shooting up into the sky. The sunset blazed orange. The next morning, the sun rose brighter than ever. The forest came alive with color again.
Lily and all the animals cheered. Berry learned that day that kindness is like a vitamin for the world—it makes everything brighter and more beautiful.
And from then on, every sunset seemed to say thank you in brilliant shades of orange, just for Berry.
