Bernie's Splash Hit Summer
Bernie was not like other bears. While most bears spent their days fishing for salmon or hunting for berries, Bernie spent his time at the old baseball field near the forest edge. He had found a dusty baseball bat and a glove that some camper had left behind, and every day, he would practice his swing.
The forest animals thought he was silly. "Bears don't play baseball," the rabbits would giggle from behind their oak trees. But Bernie didn't care. He loved the sound of the ball hitting the bat—CRACK!—and watching it soar through the sky like a shooting star.
One hot summer day, Bernie was feeling unusually tired. His paws dragged through the dirt, and even his favorite baseball seemed too heavy to lift. Mama Bear noticed his dull fur and droopy eyes.
"You haven't been eating properly," she said gently, bringing him a bowl of bright orange berries. "These are special bear vitamins. They'll give you back your strength."
But the vitamins were terribly bitter! Bernie made a face. "I don't want these! I want to play baseball!" he grumped, trudging away to the field anyway.
At the field, he met a little girl named Lily who was splashing in the nearby creek. "You look tired, Mr. Bear," she said with concern.
"I'm completely worn out," Bernie admitted, sitting heavily on his favorite log. "Even my baseball bat feels like it weighs a hundred pounds."
Lily's eyes sparkled with an idea. "What if we make your vitamins fun? What if we take them like a special bear power-up while you go swimming?"
Bernie had never tried swimming before. Bears weren't really swimmers, or so he thought. But something about Lily's excitement made him curious.
He took the bitter berries—just one quick gulp—and waded into the cool creek. The water felt magical against his fur. He paddled around, discovering he could float! And something amazing happened: the vitamins started working in the cool water, and Bernie felt stronger with every splash.
With his new energy, Bernie climbed out of the creek, grabbed his baseball bat, and swung with all his might. CRACK! The ball sailed higher than ever before, disappearing into the clouds like a tiny comet.
"You did it!" Lily cheered.
Bernie learned something wonderful that day: sometimes the things that seem yucky or scary—like bitter vitamins or trying new things—can help us become stronger than we ever imagined. And sometimes, the best discoveries come from the most unexpected places.
From then on, Bernie became the baseball-playing, swimming bear who never forgot to take his vitamins—and he always shared his wisdom with the young animals who watched him practice: "The bitter things in life often make us strongest."
