Bernie's Secret Mission
Lily had a teddy bear named Bernie. Bernie wasn't just any bear—he had sparkling blue eyes and wore a tiny red cape. Every night, Lily whispered her dreams to him, and every morning, Bernie seemed to snuggle closer, as if listening.
One sunny afternoon, Lily took Bernie to the park. Her brother was playing padel with friends. SWISH-SWISH went the racquets, and the ball bounced fast and high. Lily sat on the bench, Bernie on her lap, watching the game.
Then Lily noticed something strange. Bernie's eyes were twinkling brighter than usual. He kept looking toward the old oak tree near the water fountain.
"What do you see, Bernie?" Lily whispered.
She decided to investigate. Carrying Bernie carefully, she crept toward the tree. She became a spy—quiet as a mouse, watching everything.
Behind the oak tree, she discovered something magical. A tiny creature, no bigger than her thumb, sat beside the water fountain. It had wings like a dragonfly and skin that sparkled like diamonds. The creature was crying.
Lily gasped. The creature looked up. "Please don't tell anyone! I'm a water sprite, and I'm lost. My home is in the magical stream beyond the park, but I can't find it."
Bernie squirmed in Lily's arms. His blue eyes glowed. Suddenly, he pointed his fuzzy paw toward the hill behind the playground.
"Bernie knows!" Lily cried. She followed her bear, and the water sprite fluttered after them. Together, they climbed the grassy hill until they found it—a sparkling stream that shimmered with rainbow colors.
The water sprite squealed with joy. "You found it! Thank you!" She dove into the water, and suddenly, dozens of sprites appeared, dancing and playing. They had been hiding, waiting for their friend to return.
One by one, the sprites flew to Lily and Bernie, leaving tiny gifts—smooth stones that glowed, flowers that never wilted, and a beautiful blue ribbon that they tied around Bernie's neck.
"You're heroes," the sprites sang. "Come visit anytime!"
That night, Lily hugged Bernie tight. His new ribbon sparkled in the moonlight.
"We make a good team," she whispered. Bernie's blue eyes flashed, as if saying, "The best team."
From that day on, Lily and Bernie had many more adventures. But their favorite was always visiting the magical stream, where their tiny friends would be waiting, ready to play.
And sometimes, when no one was looking, Bernie would wink his blue eyes, and Lily would know another adventure was just beginning.
