Bernie's Midnight Mission
Bernie was no ordinary teddy bear. By day, he sat on five-year-old Lily's pillow, his brown fur soft and his black button eyes still. But when the moon rose and Lily's breathing became deep and steady, Bernie would wiggle his paws, shake his head, and come alive!
One Tuesday night, Bernie spotted something troubling. Lily's favorite silver star charm had fallen from her bracelet and rolled under her bed. She'd been so sad about losing it! Bernie knew he had to help.
But how would he reach it? Then he saw it—Lily's mini padel racquet, propped against her toy box from that afternoon's play session in the yard. Bernie's eyes twinkled. A spy always needed the right tools!
Bernie picked up the tiny racquet. It was perfect! He crept across the bedroom floor on his fuzzy tiptoes, his heart beating like a little drum. *Tap-tap-tap* went his paws. Being a secret agent bear required stealth.
When he reached the bed, Bernie peered into the darkness. There it was—the silver star, glimmering like a piece of moonlight! But it was just out of reach, tucked beside a dust bunny the size of a tennis ball.
"Time for Operation Starfish!" Bernie whispered to himself.
He slid the padel racquet under the bed, using the face to gently scoop toward the charm. *Swoosh, swoosh*—the racquet nudged the star closer and closer until—*click*—the charm landed perfectly on its surface!
Bernie pulled the racquet out slowly, carefully, like a true spy. The silver star was safe! He placed it on Lily's nightstand, right beside her favorite storybook.
As the first light of dawn crept through the curtains, Bernie hurried back to his pillow, settling into his usual stuffed bear pose. His paws were still, his button eyes unmoving.
When Lily woke up, she gasped with delight. "My star charm! It's back!" She hugged Bernie tight. "I knew you were magic, Bernie!"
Bernie didn't move, but inside his stuffed bear heart, he felt warmer than ever. Sometimes, being a spy wasn't about secrets or mystery. It was about helping a friend. And that was the best mission of all.
