Bernie's Bridge to Wisdom

Bernie was a small bear with very big dreams. While other bears were content catching salmon in the stream, Bernie wanted to visit the Great Sphinx atop the Cloud Peak. Legend said the Sphinx could answer any question in the world.

"What if I ask something silly?" Bernie worried, packing honey cakes for the journey. "What if my question isn't important enough?"

His mother nuzzled him. "The Sphinx doesn't measure importance, Bernie. She measures courage."

The path was easy until Bernie reached Whispering Gorge. Spanning the deep canyon was an old cable bridge, swaying gently in the wind. Bernie's paws trembled. The cable seemed fragile, thin as spider silk against the endless drop below.

A tiny blue bird landed on his shoulder. "Going across?"

"I... I think so," Bernie whispered. "But I'm scared."

"Good," said the bird. "Being brave doesn't mean not being scared. It means being scared and doing it anyway."

Bernie took a deep breath. Step by careful step, he made his way across the swaying cable bridge. His heart pounded like thunder, but he didn't stop. When his paws finally touched solid ground on the other side, Bernie felt something new growing inside him.

The Sphinx waited at the peak, her stone face kind and ancient. "You have come far, little bear. What is your question?"

Bernie thought of all the important things he could ask—why the sky is blue, where fish go in winter, how to always find honey. But then he remembered the bridge.

"How do I stop being afraid?" Bernie asked.

The Sphinx smiled, and Bernie understood. She didn't speak the answer. She pointed back toward the gorge, where Bernie had already crossed.

Walking home, Bernie felt taller than the mountains. He hadn't needed magic to be brave—he had it inside him all along, waiting for him to use it. And that was the greatest wisdom of all.
