Benny's Papaya Floats
On a sunny island where palm trees danced in the warm breeze, lived a large brown bear named Benny. Benny loved many things—honey, naps, and chasing butterflies—but there was one thing he wished he could do: swimming.
Every day, Benny would wade into the crystal-blue ocean until the water reached his knees, then shuffle back to shore. His feet were just too heavy! Meanwhile, colorful fish darted like rainbows through the waves.
Pip, a tiny lizard with bright green scales, would spy on the sea creatures from her favorite palm branch. "I see how the fish move!" she called down. "They wiggle their tails, not their paws!"
Benny tried wiggling his bottom, but mostly he just looked silly.
One morning, something wonderful rolled onto the sand. It was a papaya—round, golden, and bigger than Benny's head! Then another appeared. And another!
"Look!" cried Pip, scampering down the trunk. "These could be your floating helpers!"
Benny's eyes grew wide. He pushed the first papaya into the water. It bobbed like a happy rubber duck. He climbed onto it, and miracle of miracles—he floated!
With one papaya under each paw and two balancing his bottom, Benny paddled deeper than ever before. Fish swam right up to greet him. A sea turtle waved his fin. From the shore, Pip did a happy dance.
That evening, as the sunset painted the sky pink and orange, Benny shared his papaya treats with all his new ocean friends. Some bears couldn't swim, he learned, but some bears could make swimming friends.
And sometimes, the best adventures come when you're brave enough to try something new—with a little help from your friends and some floating fruit.
