Benny's Big Baseball Splash
Benny was a bear with a very big dream. Every summer afternoon, he would sit on the riverbank and watch the children play baseball on the green island across the water. The crack of the bat, the cheering, and the flying ball made Benny's heart flutter like butterfly wings.
But there was one tiny problem. Benny didn't know how to swim.
"Bears belong on land," his mother had always told him. "Your fur gets too heavy when it's wet."
One day, a small turtle named Timmy crawled up beside him. Timmy watched Benny sighing at the baseball game.
"You really want to play, don't you?" Timmy asked.
Benny nodded. "But the river is too deep and scary."
Timmy smiled. "I can teach you to swim! My grandpa taught me last summer. It's like learning to ride a bicycle — once you know how, you never forget."
Every morning for a whole week, Timmy taught Benny how to paddle his big bear paws, how to hold his breath, and how to float like a log. At first, Benny splashed and sank. He swallowed lots of river water and felt very discouraged.
"I'm too heavy," Benny said sadly. "I'll never make it to the baseball island."
"That's not true!" Timmy said. "The secret isn't being light. The secret is believing you can do it. Look at the river — it carries big logs and stones, doesn't it? The water wants to help you, not hurt you."
The next morning, Benny took a deep breath and began to swim. Splash, splash, paddle, paddle. To his surprise, the river did hold him up! When his paws got tired, he floated on his back and watched the fluffy clouds drift by.
When Benny finally reached the baseball island, the children stopped their game and stared in amazement.
"A swimming bear!" someone shouted.
"Can I play too?" Benny asked shyly.
The team captain, a girl named Lily, smiled and handed Benny a baseball glove. "We need someone in the outfield. Are you good at catching?"
Benny caught every ball that came his way! His big bear paws made the perfect glove. The children cheered, and Benny felt like the happiest bear in the whole world.
That afternoon, Benny swam back home with a baseball tucked under his arm and a new friend in his heart. He had learned two wonderful things that summer: how to swim, and that believing in yourself can make impossible dreams come true.
