Beneath the Social Pyramid

Maya adjusted her battered bucket hat, pulling the brim lower like a shield against the fluorescent lights of the gym. The Winter Bash was in full swing, and she was currently occupying the lowest level of the social pyramid—the corner near the refreshments table, nursing a lukewarm sprite.

"Nice hat," someone said.

Maya looked up to find Jake Chen, who sat at the pyramid's apex—varsity basketball, charming, and somehow still approachable. She felt like a total spy observing an alien species as he leaned against the table.

"Thanks," she managed, voice barely above the music. "It's my anti-social crown."

Jake laughed, actually laughed. "That's kinda genius. I wish I had something to hide behind sometimes."

Maya's brain short-circuited. Jake Chen, wishing he could hide? The guy who'd literally just been crowned Winter Prince?

"Seriously?" she asked before she could stop herself. "You're like, at the top of the food chain. What do you have to worry about?"

He considered this, spinning his cup. "Everyone expects something from me. Coach wants points. Teachers want leadership. Even my friends..." He shrugged. "Sometimes it's easier to just be what everyone needs, you know?"

The surprise hit Maya like a splash of cold water. Behind the curated social pyramid, everyone was just pretending.

"Well," she said, finger-compressing a dent in her hat. "If you ever need a break from being Perfect Jake, my corner has zero expectations."

Jake smiled, something genuine that crinkled his eyes. "I might take you up on that."

Later, as they waded into the center of the dance floor together, Maya tilted her hat back and finally stepped out from the shadows. The social pyramid wasn't crumbling, but somehow the view from the corner didn't seem so lonely anymore.
