Behind The Zombie Scenes

I'm running on three hours of sleep and pure caffeine. Today's the big day — my first real film shoot with my amateur crew. We're attempting a zombie apocalypse scene behind the abandoned school gym because it looks appropriately creepy and, most importantly, free.

"Bex, did you remember the extra cable?" Maya yells, adjusting the fake blood on her cheek. Our lead actress is already in full zombie mode, complete with torn clothes and pale foundation that makes her look like she hasn't seen sunlight in weeks.

I frantically dig through my backpack, panic rising. No cable. My heart starts racing faster than it did during freshman tryouts.

"Crap, I forgot it," I admit, feeling like a total failure. The whole crew goes silent. This was supposed to be our breakthrough moment — the short film that would finally get us into the youth film festival. Instead, it's becoming a disaster before we even roll camera.

Maya sighs dramatically, placing her hands on her hips. "Bex, you're literally the worst producer ever."

"Hey!" Leo protests from behind the camera. "Give her a break. We can figure this out."

Then I remember — my backup cable is coiled neatly behind my backpack. I grab it triumphantly.

"Got it!" I announce, holding it like a trophy. "Never doubt me."

The crew exhales collectively. We start rolling, and suddenly everything clicks. Our zombie actors lurch through their routine, groaning convincingly. I watch through the monitor, adrenaline pumping through my veins. Each frame feels perfect.

But then Leo, our main zombie, trips over a tree root and faceplants. His orange wig twists sideways, fake blood smearing everywhere.

We freeze. The director in me wants to scream. But then Leo pops back up, grinning with a piece of spinach stuck in his teeth from lunch.

"Cut!" someone yells, but we're all too busy laughing. The tension breaks, and suddenly this disaster feels like the best part of the day.

Maybe that's what growing up feels like — running around chaotically, messing up, and somehow making it work anyway.
