Before the Lightning
Maya's hands shook as she applied the fourth coat of orange dye. The bathroom mirror showed a stranger staring back — someone bold, someone who wouldn't spend another Friday night watching Netflix while her friends posted stories from parties she wasn't invited to.
Her mom would freak. Probably worth it.
"Maya! Get down here!" Her brother Kevin's voice carried up the stairs. "Lexi's here!"
Lexi. Her best friend since seventh grade, now practically a stranger. They'd been running in different circles since Lexi made varsity cheer and Maya... didn't.
She rinsed her hair in the sink, watching vibrant orange swirl down the drain. It looked like a highlighter pen exploded on her head. Perfect.
When she descended the stairs, Lexi's jaw actually dropped.
"What did you DO?"
"Changed my vibe." Maya shrugged. "You like?"
Lexi studied her, eyes narrowing. Then she smiled — genuinely smiled. "Actually? Yeah. It's sick."
They ended up at the park, sitting on the swings like they used to. Thunder rumbled in the distance.
"I missed you," Lexi said suddenly. "Like, I know I've been weird since tryouts, but..."
"I get it." Maya kicked at the dirt. "You're living your best life. I'm just... here."
"That's not it." Lexi hopped off her swing. "Let's run."
"What? It's gonna storm."
"Exactly. Come on."
So they ran — really ran — through the empty playground and down the street, orange hair streaming behind Maya like a flame. They sprinted until their lungs burned and the first fat drops of rain began to fall.
Then it happened — a flash of lightning that turned the whole world purple-white for one perfect, electric second. In that brief illumination, Maya caught her reflection in a puddle: orange hair matted with rain, mascara streaking down her cheeks, grinning like crazy.
She looked wild. She looked like someone who belonged in stories.
"Your hair!" Lexi laughed, breathless and drenched. "It's literally glowing in the dark!"
Maya wiped rain from her eyes. "I think I'll keep it."
"Yeah." Lexi bumped her shoulder. "Me too."
