Bearing the Surface

The padel court echoed with the sharp smack of racquets against ball, each stroke carrying years of unspoken history. Sarah watched from the sidelines, her margarita sweating onto the teak table, as David played with his new business partner—someone younger, faster, undiminished by life's quiet heartbreaks.

"You should play," David called out, grinning that boyish grin that had once undone her completely. "Remember how we used to destroy everyone at the club?"

Sarah forced a smile. She did remember. She remembered everything—the way his hand had felt on her lower back during corporate mixers, the nights they'd spent talking about everything except what mattered, the excruciating slow fade from 'almost' to 'never.' She'd had to bear that weight for three years now, carrying it like a stone in her chest.

"Maybe later," she said, turning toward the hotel pool instead.

The pool area was quieter, lit softly as dusk settled over the resort. She slipped into the water, letting the silence envelop her. This was where she came to think, to let the surface tension hold her together when she felt like dissolving completely.

Then David was there, sitting on the edge, feet dangling in the water. The proximity felt dangerous.

"I'm getting married," he said quietly.

The words hit her like a physical blow. She treaded water, fighting to keep her head above the surface.

"To—" she began, then stopped. She didn't need to ask.

"To Elena. We're happy, Sarah. Really happy."

She saw it then—the fullness of his life continuing without her, while she remained suspended in the amber of their almost-ness. The unfairness of it threatened to pull her under.

"I'm glad," she said, and meant it, though it hurt like bearing a knife between her ribs. "Truly."

He nodded, not quite meeting her eyes. "I just needed you to know."

When he left, Sarah floated on her back, staring up at the first stars. The water held her weight, if only for tonight. Tomorrow she'd need to learn to walk on land again.
