Bear Suit Energy

bearhairspy

Maya's hands shook as she texted Chloe: "Got the intel. Jason's definitely going with Jessica."

The spy operation had been going on for two weeks — tracking Jason's every move through Instagram stories and accidental eavesdrops in Spanish class. Her mom would call it stalking. Whatever.

Maya needed to know if she should wear the dress she'd spent three months' allowance on. Spoiler: she shouldn't have bothered, because Jessica had perfect hair and perfect skin and Maya had... well, she had a plan.

The plan involved a transformation. New hair — choppy layers and bangs, very "Euphoria." New confidence (theoretically). New Maya.

Instead, she got a disaster.

The stylist clearly hated her. What Maya described as "subtle face-framing layers" became what could only be described as "a bear attacked my head and lost interest halfway through." Her hair was uneven. The bangs were somehow both too short and too long simultaneously.

She spent forty-five minutes crying in her bathroom. The dance was in two days.

Then inspiration struck: her brother's mascot suit. The North High Bears. The actual fuzzy brown bear head, giant padded paws, ridiculous costume he'd worn to every football game since freshman year.

"You want to WHAT?" Chloe asked over FaceTime.

"I'm going as the bear. Nobody will know it's me. I can spy on everyone. It's literally perfect."

Inside that bear suit, something weird happened. Nobody could see her awful haircut. Nobody could see her nervous smile. She was just a bear, dancing awkwardly and high-fiving people who had no idea they were high-fiving the girl they'd judged in English.

She watched Jason and Jessica dance. They looked perfect and bored. She saw Chloe having the time of her life with some sophomore from the math team.

Then the bear head got stuck.

She tried to pull it off and it wouldn't budge. The zipper had jammed. She was trapped inside a giant foam bear head while everyone paired off for the last song. Panic rising. Hot face. Terrible airflow.

Then someone was there, unzipping the back of the costume. Fresh air. Light.

Jason.

"You were amazing in there," he said, like it was completely normal. "My little brother wants to be the mascot next year. Is it hard to dance in that?"

He was asking about the suit. He wasn't asking about her hair. He wasn't asking why she'd worn a giant bear head.

"I have to go," she said, grabbing Chloe. They escaped to Chloe's basement, eating potato chips and processing what had just happened.

Her hair was still terrible. She'd have to bear the consequences for months until it grew out. But somewhere between the panic attack in the bear head and Jason asking for mascot advice, something had shifted.

Maybe she didn't need to spy on everyone anymore. Maybe she could just show up — awful hair and all — and see what happened.

"Bear suit energy," Chloe called it. "You're officially the coolest person at North High. No cap."

Maya smiled. Her bangs were still uneven. Her life was still messy. But for the first time in forever, she didn't feel like hiding.
