Bear Suit Breakthrough

padelbearvitamin

Maya regretted everything the moment her mom thrust the bottle of vitamin D supplements at her. "You're always indoors," she said, like that explained why Maya's social life had imploded. "Here. Take these. Maybe they'll help you make actual friends."

Rude, but not wrong. Since moving to this school three months ago, Maya's closest relationship was with the library security guard.

Now here she was, sitting in detention while Mr. Harrison droned on about "community service," which apparently meant wearing the school mascot bear costume at Friday's pep rally. The same rally where Lucas—the cute junior who'd actually looked at her twice—would be playing in the padel exhibition match.

The universe had a twisted sense of humor.

"Need help with that?" A voice behind her. She turned to see Chloe, the girl who sat behind her in history, offering to help with the bear head.

"I got it," Maya said, but her hands were already sweating.

"You're going to the padel thing after, right?" Chloe asked, like it was obvious. "Everyone's going. Lucas is apparently insane at it."

Maya's stomach did that thing where it forgot how to be an organ. "I don't even know how to play."

Chloe laughed. "Neither does half the school. That's the point." She paused. "I can teach you? If you want?"

Something shifted. Maya looked at the ridiculous bear head, then at Chloe's half-smile.

"Yeah," she heard herself say. "I'd like that."

Friday arrived in a blur of polyester humiliation and unexpected friendship. Maya sweated through three bear costume changes, accidentally knocked over the principal during the mascot dance, and Chloe laughed so hard she actually fell off the bleachers.

Then, still wearing the bear feet, Chloe dragged her toward the padel courts where Lucas was wiping the floor with some seniors.

"Show time," Chloe whispered.

Maya's hands were shaking, but not from the vitamin deficiency her mom swore she had. From possibility.

She took the racket Chloe offered and stepped onto the court. Lucas looked over, smiled.

"Hey," he said. "Want to play?"

Maya didn't know how this story ended. But standing there in bear feet, holding a racket, with new friend beside her and a cute boy waiting, she finally understood something.

Sometimes the universe didn't hate you. Sometimes it just put you in a ridiculous bear costume so you'd finally be brave enough to say yes to everything you'd been too scared to try.
