Bear's Spinach Secret
Tommy hated spinach. Every time his mom served it, he made a face and pushed it away. "It's gross," he'd say.
One sunny afternoon, Tommy was playing baseball in the backyard. He hit the ball so hard it sailed over the fence and into the woods behind their house.
"I'll get it!" he called, running into the trees.
Deeper and deeper he went, pushing through bushes and hopping over logs. Finally, he found his baseball resting beside a tiny garden filled with glowing vegetables.
A big brown bear lumbered out from behind a tree.
Tommy froze.
"Looking for this?" the bear asked, holding up the baseball.
"You can talk!" Tommy gasped.
"I'm Barnaby," said the bear. "And I can talk because I eat this magical spinach every day."
A gentle bull stepped out from the garden, munching on spinach leaves. "I'm Bruno! Want to play catch? We were just playing baseball!"
Tommy's eyes widened. "A bear and a bull playing baseball?"
"We love baseball!" Bruno said, tossing a perfect pitch to Barnaby. The bear caught it easily. "Want to join our team? The Forest Champions?"
Tommy couldn't believe it. He spent the afternoon playing baseball with Barnaby and Bruno. The bear was an amazing pitcher, and the bull could hit the ball farther than anyone Tommy had ever seen.
Before heading home, Barnaby gave Tommy a shiny green spinach leaf. "Try this. It might help you with baseball tomorrow."
That evening, Tommy tried the spinach. It was delicious! He ate the whole serving at dinner. The next day at his baseball game, Tommy hit three home runs and made amazing catches.
"Tommy, you were amazing!" his coach said.
From then on, Tommy never turned down spinach again. Every week, he visited his friends Barnaby and Bruno in the forest, and they taught him that the most important thing about baseball wasn't winning—it was playing with friends.
And sometimes, just sometimes, other kids swore they saw a bear and a bull watching from the edge of the woods, cheering for Tommy.
