Bear in the Water
The lake house party was already lowkey legendary before I even arrived. You could hear the bass thumping from the driveway, see the glow of the string lights reflecting off the water, and feel the kind of energy that makes you believe this summer might actually be different from all the others.
I'd been crushing on Jordan since seventh period English, when he'd read his poem about existential dread and made it actually funny. Now he was standing by the lake's edge, shirt already off, surrounded by his swim team crew like they owned the place.
"Alex! Finally." Jordan spotted me and waved. "We were about to do a bear brigade into the water. You coming?"
"Bear brigade?" I repeated, like an absolute clown.
"Yeah, like a polar bear plunge but less organized." He grinned. "Unless you're scared?"
The thing was, I was scared. Not of jumping into some lake at midnight - I'd done that a million times. I was scared of Jordan, of this moment, of the way my stomach did actual cartwheels when he looked at me with those unfairly dark eyes. And yeah, maybe I was also scared because I was wearing a two-piece for the first time since eighth grade, and every insecurity I'd ever had about my body was currently screaming at top volume.
"I'm good," I said, aiming for chill and nailing it at about a thirty percent success rate.
"She's scared!" someone shouted, and the whole group started doing that taunting OOOOH thing that teenagers have been doing since literally forever.
"I'm not scared," I lied. "I just... I have stuff in my bag."
What stuff, Alex? What stuff could possibly be in your crossover bag that matters more than jumping into a lake with Jordan?
Jordan swam over to the dock, water streaming down his shoulders, and okay, I was definitely staring. "Hey. For real though, you should come in. The water's actually perfect."
"I don't have a towel," I said weakly.
"We'll figure it out." He was close enough now that I could see the droplets clinging to his eyelashes. "Unless there's another reason?"
He knew. Somehow, he absolutely knew that I was seconds away from backing out of this whole night because my brain was doing that thing where it overanalyzed every possible outcome until I paralyzed myself with anxiety.
"Fine," I said, and before I could talk myself out of it, I jumped.
The water was actually freezing, and I came up sputtering while everyone laughed, but Jordan was right there smiling like I'd just done something brave instead of just jumping into some lake.
"See?" He said, treading water beside me. "Bear mode activated."
"Bear mode is not a thing," I said, but I was smiling too.
"It is now."
We floated there while the party continued on shore, and for the first time all night, my brain finally shut up. No anxiety, no overthinking, just me and Jordan and the water and this moment that felt like it could be the start of something real.
"Hey Alex?"
"Yeah?"
"I'm glad you came."
The water was still cold, but suddenly, I didn't feel it at all.
