Bear Hat Courage

padelbearpalmhat

Maya's palms were literally sweating through her grip on the padel racket. Saturday morning at the sports club, and somehow Jake from AP Chem was standing across the net looking annoyingly perfect in his backwards hat.

"You ready to get crushed, Maya?" Jake grinned, bouncing the ball like he owned the place.

"In your dreams," she shot back, but her voice cracked. Classic.

The game started, and honestly? She was playing okay-ish until her stupid bear beanie slid off her head and onto the court. She'd bought it on impulse because it looked fierce, but now it was just lying there like a dead animal while everyone stared.

"Nice bear," Jake said, deadpan.

Maya's face felt like actual lava. She snatched it up, but then something weird happened—Jake took off his hat and tossed it to her.

"Trade. Mine's lucky."

It was a hideous neon trucker hat that said 'BEACH BUM' in cracked letters. She couldn't tell if he was roasting her or not.

"You're messing with me," she said, gripping the hat.

"Maybe. But you're too stressed about looking cool. Nobody actually cares."

Maya looked around. Her friends were too busy laughing at something Chloe said to notice her mini crisis. Jake was just... being normal.

She put on the ugly hat. It smelled like coconut shampoo and old sweat.

"This is literally the ugliest thing I've ever worn," she said.

Jake's real laugh surprised her—genuine, not mean. "Yeah. But you're playing better already."

They finished the game, and Maya actually won. Walking home afterward, she caught her reflection in a shop window: ridiculous neon hat, fierce bear beanie in her hand, palms finally dry. Maybe Jake had a point. Nobody was watching as close as she thought.

Monday at school, Jake nodded at her in the hallway. She nodded back, wearing her bear beanie like she meant it.
