Bear Hat Confidence

Maya stared at the monstrosity on her head. The brown fuzzy **bear** ears drooped sadly, the plastic snout already scratched from a summer of ice cream scoop mishaps. Her first job at Sugar Shack had seemed cool—until she realized the uniform included this ridiculous **hat** that made her look like a failed mascot.

"You look like a hungry woodland creature," her best friend Chloe had FaceTimed earlier, wheezing. Maya had almost quit right then. But her parents had been so proud when she got the job, and she needed the money for the new iPhone.

Her room was her sanctuary, especially her desk with its neat row of succulents and the tiny bowl containing Goldie, her orange **goldfish**. Goldie swam in lazy circles, completely unbothered by Maya's existential crisis about fashion dignity.

"Least you don't have to wear a hat," Maya muttered, dropping a flake of fish food into the bowl. Goldie darted to the surface, and Maya felt weirdly seen. This fish was living his best life in a literal fishbowl, and here she was spiraling over some faux fur.

At work, the usual after-school crowd filtered in. Maya kept her head down, focusing on scooping mint chocolate chip. Until HE walked in. Liam from AP English, the one with the perfect jawline and the way he looked like he'd stepped out of a Netflix show.

"Can I get..." He paused, staring. "Is that a bear?"

Maya's face burned. "It's the uniform."

Liam considered this. "It's actually kind of iconic. Like, you're committed to the bit."

"Committed to the scoop," she shot back, and then—they both laughed. Something unspooled in her chest.

"My little sister would lose her mind over this hat," Liam said, and somehow they were talking about his annoying younger sibling and Maya's goldfish and the weird dignity of minimum-wage jobs.

When she got home, Goldie was still doing laps. Maya caught her reflection—ears askew, chocolate smudge on her snout, not giving a damn. She grinned. The bear hat was ridiculous, sure. But she owned ridiculous now.
