Bear, Cancelled

The giant inflatable **bear** towered over the corner of Maya's bedroom like a confused party guest. Her dad had won it at a work carnival and insisted she bring it to Jake's house party—because nothing says 'cool teen' like a six-foot-tall plush grizzly, apparently.

"You're actually bringing it?" Kara asked, struggling to keep a straight face as they walked up the driveway.

"My dad said it's a conversation starter!" Maya protested, though she already regretted everything.

Inside, the party thudded with bass and nervous energy. Jake spotted her and immediately forgot whatever cool greeting he'd practiced. The bear drooped against the wall like it was questioning its life choices.

Then came the food. Maya took a bite of the spinach artichoke dip—her favorite—and that's when it happened. THE moment. The one where your friend mouths 'you have something in your teeth' and suddenly you understand why people say they'd rather die.

She spent twenty minutes in the bathroom, extracting **spinach** from her braces with ninja-like precision. When she finally emerged, storm clouds were gathering outside. Perfect.

"So, yeah," Jake said, leaning against the wall next to her, oblivious to the spinach emergency. "My parents are out of town, but—"

**LIGHTNING** flashed. Thunder shook the house. The power died.

Someone screamed. Then laughter. Someone else suggested ghost stories. Jake scrambled to find flashlights while Maya stood there in the sudden darkness, wondering if this night could get any weirder.

"Hey, whose bear is that?" a voice called out in the dark.

"It's Maya's," Kara announced with evil delight. "Her dad made her bring it."

For a terrible second, Maya thought she'd die of embarrassment. But then someone found the inflatable bear and started doing a ridiculous dance in the flashlight beam. Everyone lost it. Even Jake was cracking up.

"Actually," he said, finally leaning in close, "it's kind of awesome that you brought it."

"Really?" Maya raised an eyebrow, trying to play it cool even though her stomach did that annoying flip thing.

"Yeah. Most people wouldn't. Shows you don't take yourself too seriously."

Outside, rain pounded down. Inside, someone had found an old HDMI **cable** and hooked up a phone to the still-working TV. They put on a terrible horror movie that everyone proceeded to roast.

Maya caught Jake watching her during the opening scene. He smiled. She smiled back, spinach-free and surprisingly okay with the weirdest first-date scenario in history.

Sometimes the nights that start as disasters end up being the ones you actually remember.
