Bear at the Pool

padelpoolbearwater

Fifteen-year-old Maya's summer took a turn when she joined the exclusive padel club. Her brother Ryan had bragged about the courts for months, but Maya felt out of place among the polished teens in their designer sneakers.

The first afternoon, she perched on the pool edge, watching water ripple as Ryan and his friends dominated the padel court. "You coming in?" called Chloe, the girl with the perfect serve and equally perfect glare.

Maya slipped into the cool water, secretly glad her padel skills were nonexistent. Better to be invisible than terrible.

That's when it happened. A massive black bear emerged from the woods, ambling toward the pool area like it owned the place.

"BEAR!" someone screamed.

Chloe, usually so composed, tripped scrambling out of the water. Ryan dropped his padel racket with a clatter. But Maya—frozen, fascinated—watched the bear pause at the pool's edge.

It didn't attack. It just dipped a massive paw in the water, then lumbered off toward the padel courts like it was late for a match.

Later, as they sat wrapped in towels, adrenaline fading into disbelief, Chloe actually laughed. "Did that seriously just happen?"

Ryan shook his head. "That bear has better padel form than you, Maya."

She grinned. "Guess I found my sport then—bear watching."

The next day, Maya showed up with her old racket. "Teach me," she told Ryan. For the first time all summer, she felt like she belonged. The bear had done what no amount of trying could—it had made everyone equally awkward, equally human.

Some days, when she swam laps alone, Maya still scanned the woods. Just in case her new training partner showed up again.
