Bathroom Confidential

The bass from downstairs vibrated through the floor tiles, making my teeth rattle. I'd been hiding in Maya's bathroom for twenty minutes, clutching my iPhone like it was a lifeline. Another Saturday night, another party where I felt like a goldfish in a bowl—visible, contained, and entirely too exposed.

Outside the door, someone's laugh sounded suspiciously like Kayla's. My ex-best friend who'd decided I wasn't cool enough once she made varsity cheer. I opened Instagram, couldn't help myself. I'd become a professional Kayla-spies-from-afar expert since the friend breakup. Pathetic? Maybe. But also survival.

Then came the lightning. Not the weather kind—my actual phone cable, which I'd somehow managed to wrap around the sink faucet while pacing. A spark, a fizz, and my charging port was toast. Dead phone. Dead social life. Dead.

The bathroom door swung open. Some guy I'd never seen before, wearing a shirt that said BEAR HUGS NOT DRUGS in peeling letters. We locked eyes. He held up a solo cup like it was a peace offering.

"Hiding too?" he asked. "I'm Leo. Maya's cousin."

"Sam," I said. "Hiding, definitely."

He leaned against the doorframe. "What's your backstory? You look like someone who'd have excellent ones."

So I told him about Kayla. About feeling invisible at my own school. About my pet goldfish at home who had better social skills than me.

Leo nodded. "Know what my therapist says? The people who matter don't make you feel small. The ones who do? They're just background characters in your movie."

Downstairs, the music changed to something we both knew. We looked at each other.

"Wanna go show Kayla what she's missing?" Leo asked.

I grinned. "Let's go."

Sometimes the best moments aren't planned. They just happen when you're stuck in a bathroom with a stranger wearing a ridiculous shirt and nothing to lose.
