Barnaby's Zombie Friend

Barnaby was a golden retriever with a heart bigger than his fluffy tail. Every morning, he'd trot through Willowbrook Village, wagging at everyone he met. But there was one house everyone avoided—the old haunted mansion on misty Moonlight Hill.

"That's where the Zombie lives," whispered the baker, clutching his apron. "He moans and groans all night!"

Barnaby's ears perked up. Zombies sounded lonely.

In a crystal bowl on Mrs. Puddlewick's windowsill lived Gilbert, a magical goldfish with shimmering orange scales. Gilbert could talk, but only to pure-hearted creatures. And Barnaby had the purest heart in Willowbrook.

"Don't go there, Barnaby!" Gilbert bubbled when the dog shared his plan. "But... if you do, splash this special water on anything scary. It's from the Fountain of Friendship!"

Barnaby carried Gilbert's bowl carefully as they climbed Moonlight Hill. The old mansion creaked in the wind like a giant wooden beast. Inside, shadows danced on walls covered in cobwebs.

"HELLO?" Barnaby called out bravely.

A low moan echoed from the basement. Groan. Shuffle. Groan.

Barnaby's tail tucked between his legs, but he crept forward anyway. There, sitting among dusty old toys, was a green figure with patchy clothes and messy hair. The Zombie looked up with sad, mismatched eyes.

"Nobody wants to play with me," the Zombie sniffled. "I just wanted to build block towers, but everyone runs away."

Barnaby realized the Zombie wasn't scary at all—he was just lonely! The dog trotted over and gave the Zombie a big, slobbery lick right on the cheek.

The Zombie gasped. Then he giggled. Then he laughed so hard his green cheeks turned pink!

"I'm Zombo!" he said, smiling. "Would you like to see my block tower? It's very tall!"

Gilbert splashed some magical water from his bowl, and suddenly Zombo's patchy clothes became colorful and bright. His mismatched eyes sparkled like stars. He hadn't been a scary Zombie at all—he'd just been under a loneliness spell!

Soon, children from all over Willowbrook came to play. Zombo built the most amazing block towers anyone had ever seen. Barnaby would guard them while Gilbert told fishy jokes that made everyone laugh.

And the moral? Sometimes the scariest things are just the loneliest things. And a little friendship—whether from a brave dog, a magical goldfish, or a kind kid—can break any spell.

From that day on, nobody in Willowbrook was afraid of the word "zombie" anymore. They just remembered their friend Zombo, and how wonderful it felt to be brave enough to say hello.
