Barnaby's Swimming Lesson
Barnaby was a very unusual bull. While other bulls spent their days grazing and sleeping in the warm sun, Barnaby spent his time gazing longingly at the sparkling farm pond. He dreamed of swimming, but everyone knows bulls don't swim—they're too heavy, too clumsy, and their hooves are made for walking on grass, not gliding through water.
One especially hot afternoon, Barnaby stood at the edge of the pond, watching the dragonflies dance above the water's surface. "I wish I could be like you," he sighed to a tiny orange goldfish that had popped its head above the water.
The goldfish, whose name was Finley, had been watching the sad bull for days. Unlike other fish who might have been scared, Finley saw something special in Barnaby's gentle eyes.
"Why don't you come in?" Finley called out. "The water's perfect today!"
"I can't," said Barnaby. "Bulls sink. Everyone knows that."
Finley swam closer to the shore. "Not true! You've never even tried! Come on—I'll teach you!"
Barnaby hesitated. His hooves clicked nervously on the muddy bank. But Finley's cheerful smile gave him courage. Slowly, carefully, Barnaby stepped into the cool water. One hoof. Two hooves. Then his whole front end.
"Don't panic!" instructed Finley. "Just relax and let the water hold you. Imagine you're floating on a cloud!"
To Barnaby's surprise, he didn't sink! With Finley swimming beside him, giving instructions, Barnaby discovered that bulls could swim after all. He kicked his powerful legs and moved through the water like a boat.
"You're doing it!" cheered Finley. "See? Sometimes the things we think are impossible are just things we haven't tried yet!"
They spent the rest of the summer swimming together—Finley teaching Barnaby how to dive for shiny pebbles, and Barnaby giving Finley rides on his back when the little fish got tired. The other farm animals couldn't believe their eyes when they saw a bull gliding gracefully through the pond.
Barnaby learned that day that believing in yourself is the first step to doing anything amazing. And he found the best friend a bull could ever wish for in a tiny goldfish who saw possibility where others saw impossibility.
Sometimes the most unlikely friendships are the most magical ones.
