Barnaby's Secret Garden Mission

bullspyvitamin

Barnaby was no ordinary bull. While other bulls spent their days charging and snorting, Barnaby preferred quiet walks through the meadow, watching butterflies dance.

What nobody knew was that Barnaby had a secret job. He was the forest's gentlest spy.

Every morning, Barnaby would tiptoe through the tall grass (which was quite hard for a bull!) and listen carefully. The squirrels, rabbits, and bluejays trusted him completely. They would whisper their worries into his velvety ears.

"Barnaby!" cried tiny Pip the mouse one spring morning. "My grandmother is very weak. She needs the golden sunshine berries, but they only grow on the tallest hill!"

Barnaby nodded his massive head solemnly. This was a spy mission indeed. The hill was steep and the path was hidden.

As Barnaby climbed, he met a sad little sparrow. "What's wrong?" asked Barnaby, pausing his spy work.

"My chicks won't grow strong," she chirped. "They lack the magic forest vitamin that makes bones sturdy and feathers bright."

Barnaby's eyes widened. The sunshine berries! They were full of this special vitamin. Now his mission was even more important.

When he finally reached the top, the golden berries glowed like tiny suns. But they grew on a ledge that seemed impossible to reach.

Barnaby thought hard. Then, remembering the squirrels' lessons about being a good friend, he lay down carefully and stretched his body across the gap. "Climb across my back!" he called to the creatures who had followed him.

One by one, mice and birds scampered across Barnaby's strong, warm back to reach the precious berries.

"You saved us!" cheered Pip, carrying a basketful. "But Barnaby, you didn't take any for yourself!"

Barnaby smiled his slow, sweet smile. "I had my own special vitamin today," he said. "The vitamin of friendship. And that's the strongest magic of all."

From that day on, Barnaby was still the forest's spy, but now everyone knew his secret — the bull with the biggest heart had the greatest magic of all.
