Barnaby's Orange Adventure
Barnaby was a small brown bear with a very big problem. He lived in a cozy cave near Crystal River, but Barnaby was the only bear in the forest who was afraid of water. While his brothers and sisters splashed and played in the river every afternoon, Barnaby would hide behind a big oak tree and watch.
One sunny morning, Barnaby heard a tiny sound coming from the riverbank. "Help! Help!" cried a small voice. Barnaby crept closer and saw the most beautiful fish he had ever seen. She had shimmering orange scales that sparkled like tiny suns, and she was trapped in a shallow pool that was drying up.
"Please help me," said the orange fish. "The river is moving, and I got left behind!"
Barnaby's heart beat fast. He would need to go swimming to help her. But the fish looked so sad, and her orange scales were losing their sparkle.
"I've never been swimming before," Barnaby admitted. "I'm afraid."
"That's okay," the fish said kindly. "Bravery isn't about not being scared. It's about doing what's right even when you ARE scared. My name is Coral. What's yours?"
"I'm Barnaby," he whispered.
Barnaby took a deep breath. He put one paw in the water. Then another. The cool river felt nice! Before he knew it, Barnaby was swimming! He wasn't afraid anymore—he was gliding through the water like a fuzzy boat. He carefully nudged Coral into the deeper water, where she could swim back to her family.
"Thank you, Barnaby!" Coral called. "You're the bravest bear I've ever met!"
That afternoon, Barnaby swam with his brothers and sisters for the first time. His mother was so surprised and proud. And every day after that, Barnaby would visit the river to swim with his new friend Coral, who would sometimes let him ride on her back as she showed him the magical underwater world.
Barnaby learned that sometimes the scariest things lead to the best adventures—and that helping a friend is the bravest thing a bear can do.
