Barnaby's Midnight Friend
Barnaby was a boy who collected secrets like shiny pebbles. He knew which neighbor left cookies for the fairies, and where the moonbeams danced at midnight. But his biggest secret lived behind the old oak tree at the edge of Miller's Pond.
Every evening, Barnaby would slip away with his pockets full of dog treats. 'Just one more visit,' he'd whisper, ducking through the twisted roots.
A scruffy golden dog emerged from the shadows, tail wagging like a metronome keeping time to an invisible song. Barnaby had named him Sunshine, even though they only met after dark.
But tonight, something was wrong. Sunshine didn't come. Instead, strange groaning echoed across the water. Barnaby's heart hammered against his ribs.
A figure shambled toward him – something that looked like a zombie from storybooks, all tattered clothes and clumsy steps. Barnaby wanted to run, but his feet stayed planted.
'Please,' the zombie croaked, and to Barnaby's shock, it spoke in his grandfather's voice! 'Help me find my dog.'
Sunshine burst from the bushes, barking joyfully. The zombie's face softened, and suddenly Barnaby understood – this wasn't a monster at all. It was his grandfather, transformed by a midnight curse!
Sunshine licked the zombie's hand, and the spell began to crackle and fade. Tattered clothes transformed back into a familiar cardigan. The zombie's confused expression cleared into recognition.
'Barnaby?' his grandfather whispered, 'You saved me.'
The old clock tower chimed twelve times. The curse lifted completely. Barnaby learned that night that the scariest things often just need a friend – and that sometimes, the best secrets are the ones we share together.
Now Barnaby and his grandfather visit Miller's Pond together, where Sunshine waits, and where magic still dances in the moonlight.
