Barnaby's Magical Papaya Wish

Barnaby was not like other bulls. While his brothers chased cows and snorted at farmers, Barnaby preferred quiet moments under the papaya tree behind the barn. His enormous black body would curl up carefully beside the trunk, and he would dream.

One summer morning, something extraordinary happened. A perfect golden papaya fell from the tree and landed *plop* right between Barnaby's horns. He blinked his big brown eyes in surprise.

"Well, that's lucky," said a tiny voice.

Barnaby looked around. Nobody there.

"Down here, silly!"

It was a goldfish — swimming in the air! Its scales shimmered like rainbows in the sunlight.

"I'm Finn," said the goldfish. "And that's a Wishing Papaya. One bite grants your heart's truest desire."

Barnaby's heart pounded. He knew exactly what he wanted. But then he thought of his friend — the smallest, scrawniest calf who always got picked on. Little Rosie never had enough to eat, and she was always cold at night.

"Can I give my wish to someone else?" Barnaby asked.

Finn did a somersault in mid-air. "That's the best kind of wish."

Barnaby took one bite of the magical papaya. It tasted like sunshine and stardust. He closed his eyes and wished with all his enormous heart: *Let Rosie be warm and full forever.*

Golden sparkles swirled around the farm. When Barnaby opened his eyes, Rosie's patchy coat had grown thick and shiny. Her ribs didn't show anymore. She was fast asleep, snoring happily in the warmest spot.

"You made a friend's wish come true instead of your own," Finn said. "That's the rarest magic of all."

Barnaby smiled, chewing on the rest of his papaya. He already had everything he needed — shade, fruit, and now, a flying goldfish friend who sometimes visited with stories from faraway ponds.

And from that day on, whenever Barnaby saw papayas falling, he made sure to share them with everyone who needed a little magic.
