Barnaby's Lightning Swim
Barnaby was a small, scruffy dog with one ear that stood up and one that flopped down. Every night, he dreamed of swimming. But Barnaby couldn't swim. He was afraid of water.
One evening, a terrible storm rolled over the hills. Lightning flashed across the sky like golden cracks in a giant blue bowl. Rain poured down, filling the old empty pool behind the abandoned house at the edge of town.
Barnaby, running from the thunder, found shelter near the pool. But as he watched, something magical happened. Each lightning strike made the water glow — first silver, then pink, then golden.
A small girl appeared at the pool's edge. She wore a raincoat the color of sunshine.
"You're Barnaby," she said. "I've been waiting for you."
Barnaby's tail thumped nervously.
"This pool only appears during storms," the girl explained. "It's a lightning pool. And tonight, it will teach you to swim."
She took a step onto the water's surface — and didn't sink! Instead, she began walking across the glowing pool like it was solid ground.
"Come, Barnaby. The water won't let you fall. Not tonight."
Barnaby's heart pounded. But the girl's eyes were kind, like his owner's eyes when she said, "Good boy."
He took one step. Then another. His paws touched the water's surface, and something wonderful happened — he didn't sink. He was walking on water!
"Now swim," the girl whispered. "Believe."
Barnaby did something brave. He lay down on his belly and began paddling. The water held him. He was swimming!
All night, Barnaby swam through the glowing pool while lightning painted the sky. He swam back and forth, growing stronger, braver.
When morning came, the storm ended. The pool disappeared, leaving only empty concrete behind.
But Barnaby knew a secret now. When summer rains came and the old pool filled again, he wasn't afraid. He jumped right in, paddling happily while his owner laughed.
Sometimes, late at night, Barnaby still dreamed of the lightning girl who taught him that believing in yourself is the bravest magic of all.
And sometimes, during summer storms, if you looked carefully, you might see a small scruffy dog walking on water, swimming through moonlight, absolutely fearless.
