Barnaby's Grand Slam Game

Barnaby was a bear with very big paws and very big dreams. Every summer afternoon, he would creep to the edge of the forest and watch the children playing baseball in the meadow. How he wished he could join them!

One sunny Saturday, a boy named Leo spotted Barnaby behind the oak tree. Instead of running away, Leo waved. "Hey bear! Want to play?"

Barnaby's heart soared! He trotted onto the field, but his huge paws made everything difficult. He couldn't hold the tiny bat. When he tried to catch the ball, it bounced right off his fuzzy belly. The other animals giggled, and Barnaby felt his ears droop.

"Don't worry," said Leo. "My grandmother says spinach gives you super strength! Let's try some."

They found a patch of wild spinach growing near the creek. Barnaby took a big crunchy bite. Suddenly, he felt tingles from his nose to his toes! His paws felt steady. His eyes could track the smallest leaf fluttering in the wind.

When it was Barnaby's turn to bat, something magical happened. The baseball sailed through the air, shining like a tiny moon. Barnaby swung with all his might—CRACK! The ball flew higher and higher, over the trees, over the mountains, all the way to a rainbow!

"A GRAND SLAM!" everyone cheered.

Barnaby learned that sometimes you need help from friends (and a little spinach) to discover your true talents. That summer, the forest baseball team became the most unusual team in the world, and Barnaby became the greatest batter anyone had ever seen.

Now every game day, you can still see Barnaby and his friends playing baseball in the meadow, with a big patch of spinach growing right near home plate—just in case anyone needs a little magic.
