Barnaby's Electric Surprise
Barnaby was the smallest bull on Sunnybrook Farm, with the fluffiest, messiest hair anyone had ever seen. The other bulls had sleek, shiny coats. Barnaby's hair stuck out in every direction, especially when it rained.
"You look like you got struck by lightning already," chuckled Thunder, the biggest bull, as they grazed together.
Barnaby lowered his head. He wished his hair would behave.
One afternoon, dark clouds gathered overhead. The farmer's daughter, Emma, ran to the garden, forgetting her harvest basket. Barnaby watched as she scattered something green and leafy near the old oak tree.
"Spinach!" Emma called, rushing back to the house. "Don't let the storm wash it away!"
Crack! BOOM!
Lightning struck the oak tree. The glowing spinach shimmered with magic. Barnaby's nose twitched. He'd never tried spinach before.
One nibble couldn't hurt, right?
As Barnaby munched the magical leaves, something tingled through his body. His messy hair began to glow gold! Tiny sparks danced between his curls like fireflies at dusk.
Thunder and the other bulls gathered around, eyes wide.
"What's happening?" Thunder whispered.
Barnaby felt strange—wonderful. When a second bolt of lightning flashed, he didn't run away like everyone else. Instead, his hair reached up like golden antenna, catching the electricity harmlessly. The crackling energy flowed through him, gentle as a stream, and shot back into the sky as beautiful ribbons of light.
The farm's power had gone out in the storm. But through Barnaby's magical connection, the barn lights flickered back on. The farmer's emergency radio crackled to life. Emma cheered from her window.
"My hair isn't messy," Barnaby realized, his heart swelling with warmth. "It's special!"
Thunder stepped forward and nudged Barnaby's shoulder. "I'm sorry I teased you, friend. You're the most amazing bull on the farm."
The other bulls gathered around, sharing the rest of the spinach. But only Barnaby's hair glowed—because only he had been brave enough to try something new.
That night, as the storm passed and a rainbow stretched across the sky, Barnaby finally understood. Being different wasn't bad at all. Sometimes, the things that make us unique are exactly what make us magical.
And from that day forward, whenever Barnaby's hair stood up in crazy directions, the other bulls would smile, knowing their friend was ready for adventure—and ready to help, no matter what lightning life might bring.
