Barnaby's Courage Cable
Barnaby was the smallest bear in Whispering Woods, so small that the other bears called him 'Little Berry.' He had fluffy brown fur, round ears that twitched when he was nervous, and a very big problem—Barnaby was afraid of everything.
One sunny morning, Barnaby's grandmother Bear-ma gave him something special. 'These are courage vitamins,' she said, dropping three glowing orange berries into his paw. 'One for before you climb, one for when you're scared, and one for when you reach the top.'
Barnaby blinked. 'But what do I need courage for?'
Bear-ma pointed upward. 'The Great Honey Tree grows at the top of Misty Mountain. Its honey can make anyone brave forever. But you must cross the Sky Cable to get there.'
Barnaby's tummy did flip-flops. The Sky Cable was a thick rope bridge stretched across the deepest canyon in the forest. It swayed in the wind like a sleepy snake.
He ate the first courage vitamin. It tasted like sunshine and strawberries. Suddenly, his feet felt lighter, like they could dance on clouds.
Barnaby climbed and climbed until he reached the canyon. The cable stretched out before him, disappearing into the mist. His legs trembled.
He ate the second vitamin. This one tasted like thunder and rainbows. His heart pounded like a drum, but now it felt excited instead of scared.
Barnaby stepped onto the cable. It swayed beneath his paws. One step, two steps, three steps... Then something wonderful happened. A bluebird flew down and landed on his shoulder.
'You're doing great!' chirped the bird. 'I'm Pip! Can I come too?'
Barnaby nodded, and together they inched across. A squirrel joined them. Then a rabbit. Soon, a whole line of animals followed Barnaby across the swaying cable. They weren't just crossing a bridge—they were making friends.
When they reached the other side, Barnaby ate the last vitamin. It tasted like victory and vanilla. He realized something amazing: the vitamins hadn't made him brave at all. They had just reminded him that courage means taking the first step, even when you're shaking.
At the top of Misty Mountain, the Great Honey Tree waited. But Barnaby didn't need its magic anymore. He handed the golden honeycomb to Pip the bird.
'You keep it,' Barnaby smiled. 'I think I'm already brave enough.'
And every day after that, little animals from all over Whispering Woods came to cross the Sky Cable with Barnaby, their brave and wonderful friend.
